TENDER ANNOUNCEMENT STATEMENT: 14.02.12

Emily Moore, Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Connex Transport Jersey Ltd is pleased to confirm its commitment to delivering a high quality public transport service to the Island for the remainder of its existing contract.

Naturally, it is a source of disappointment that we have not been given the opportunity to build on the achievements of the last 10 years, which have seen passenger numbers increase from 2.4 million in 2002 to 3.4 million in 2011.

The last decade has seen a marked improvement in the quality of public transport provided for Islanders and this has been reflected in the increased number of people travelling by bus. Last year alone, the number of commuters travelling at peak times increased by 20% which contributed to an overall growth of 2% in passenger numbers and increased revenue of 7.1% for the States of Jersey with £3,440,353 being generated in 2011.

This success is the result of an increase in frequency on many routes, especially at commuter times, in the evenings and weekends, and by the enhanced quality of buses operating the services. Under Connex's period of operation, wheelchair users have been able to travel by bus for the first time and Islanders have benefited from a return of double deckers to Jersey's roads.

Further revolutionising the face of bus travel in Jersey, Connex has undertaken the day-to-day management of Liberation Station giving residents and visitors a modern and comfortable waiting environment combining technology with traditional customer service.

Connex has also firmly established itself as a Jersey company, playing a strong role in the local community and supporting a number  of charities and local organisations. We were also proud in 2008 to be awarded the prestigious Company of the Year Award at the Jersey Awards for Enterprise in recognition of our commitment to both passengers and staff.

We would like to assure all our passengers that we will continue to deliver a high quality service until the current contract expires on 31 December 2012 and we would like to thank all passengers for their loyalty and support throughout our period of operation in Jersey.

MORE COMMUTERS USING BUSES IN 2011

Emily Moore, Monday, February 13, 2012

The number of people travelling by bus has increased by 2.8% in 2011 with 3,250,395 passenger journeys having taken place during the year.

In 2011, the categories of passengers enjoying a healthy level of growth were:

Adults buying single journey tickets: up 1.9%;

Pensioners: up 2.0%

Unlimited travel pass holders (mainly visitors): up 9.0%.

The only category to fall slightly was Children and Students where figures fell by 0.1%.

The most significant growth category was commuter pass-holders where figures rose by 38.2%. Accordingly, the overall growth in passenger numbers can be attributed largely to the increased number of people travelling to and from work by bus.

The Sustainable Transport Policy (STP) released by the States of Jersey in 2010 revealed that in June 2009, 861 people travelled to work by bus during the morning peak period.

In December 2011, a survey conducted between 0700 and 0900 on all buses travelling into St Helier recorded passenger numbers of 1,677 - an increase of 48% on the 2009 figures of 861. This is also an increase of 20% on the 2010 figures of 1,391.

Connex Transport Jersey Ltd Managing Director Eric Le Roux said: '2011 has been a very encouraging year for public transport in the Island and very much in line with the STP target of a 100% rise in commuter figures by 2015.

'These figures show the success of our continued commitment to enhance the network through the provision of additional commuter services and our investment in new buses. These developments have increased capacity at peak times and strengthened the image of bus travel attracting more people onto the Mybus network.

'While the Sustainable Transport Policy targets are challenging, we are positive that they are achievable within the timescale. Further investment in both the level of services, the provision of high capacity and comfortable buses following in the mould of the new Enviro 200 and double deckers, and innovations in technology such as Smartcard ticketing, will help us to meet these objectives by 2015.

'In 2002, 2.4 million passengers travelled by bus. Just nine yeras later, we have welcomed more than 3.2 million passengers on board. We are committed to attracting more people onto the buses by improving public transport and helping to protect the environment by reducing gas emissions for the benefit of the local community.'

EXTRA BUSES TO LIGHTEN SHOPPERS' LOADS

Emily Moore, Tuesday, November 29, 2011

HELPING shoppers to take advantage of the late night shopping this December, Mybus will run additional buses every Thursday in the build-up to Christmas.

Complementing the existing timetabled evening services, Mybus will provide extra route 4 services to Trinity Church and additional route 18 journeys to Le Marais. The route 4 buses will leave Liberation Station at 1835 and 2015 while the route 18 services will depart at 1920 and 2100.

These services will enhance the 34 departures which are already timetabled to depart from Liberation Station every weekday between 1800 and 2400. Those buses provide services on the routes 1 to Gorey, 3 to Rozel, 9 to Greve de Lecq, 12 to Corbiere, 15 to the Airport/Mermaid and 25 and 27 circular routes to St Mary, St John and St Lawrence.

Connex Jersey Managing Director Eric Le Roux said: 'We have worked hard in conjunction with Transport and Technical Services to develop the level of evening services in the winter and I think this year's timetable which features over 30 evening departures every weekday, and additional Friday and Saturday departures, shows that the service has been greatly enhanced. We hope that the scheduled services together with these extra routes to Trinity and Le Marais will enable everybody to take advantage of the late night shopping opportunities and enjoy the festive period.'
